Belgium releases coronavirus vaccination plans

Distribution of shots will start on January 5.

Belgium's coronavirus vaccine rollout, starting in early January, will be free and voluntary, deploying five different vaccines and 22 million doses in total, according to detailed plans released by its health ministry on Thursday.
The announcement — which comes a day after Prime Minister Alexander de Croo said distribution will start January 5 — lays out six groups, vaccinated over three phases, in order of priority.

During the first phase, a very limited amount of vaccines will be available to residents and staff of care homes and health care professionals. 600,000 doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech jab will go to 300,000 people, since two doses are necessary per person.

Under the second phase, when more vaccines with easier storage requirements are ready, people over 65; at-risk patients between 45 and 65; and people with essential social and/or economic functions will get their dose.

The last phase of the plan, targeting other at-risk patients and the rest of the adult population, can start when there's a sufficient supply of vaccines available.

Still, it's likely that the majority of citizens won't get the jab before the summer, warned Dirk Ramaeckers, the head of the Belgian vaccination task force.

The vaccines to be distributed are from AstraZeneca/Oxford; Johnson & Johnson; Pfizer/BioNTech; CureVac; and Moderna.

Merkel says Germany to receive 70 million doses of coronavirus vaccine

Chancellor Angela Merkel has given an update on where Germany stands when it comes to coronavirus vaccinations.

Merkel said the federal and state governments are preparing for the vaccination programme, and that the first vaccine approvals in the EU could happen at the end of December.

With an eye on applications by BioNTech-Pfizer as well as Moderna for the use of their Covid-19 vaccines in Europe, Merkel said 70 million doses in total from both types of vaccines can be delivered in the first quarter of next year if they are given authorisation.

But that will not be enough for Germany's 83-million-strong population, she said, stressing that the country would need to "get through winter" without huge stocks of doses.

Berlin mayor Michael Müller said he hoped the government would provide concrete plans for a mass vaccination programme. He said regulations were still needed on how and which people will be invited for their vaccinations first.

Müller said it was important for the programme to be the same throughout Germany, rather than there be differences between federal states.

Although Germany has said that vulnerable people (such as the elderly and those with underlying conditions) and key workers will be vaccinated first, no concrete plans have been released.
